24 Apr Year 6 – Orienteering
This week’s PE lesson focused on orienteering, with an emphasis on teamwork, communication and strategic thinking. Pupils in Year 6 were placed into small groups and challenged to complete a series of tasks. From the outset, it was clear that success depended not on individual speed, but on how effectively each team could collaborate. As the activity progressed, pupils began to communicate and strategise, demonstrating an emerging understanding of cooperative planning. Some groups initially struggled with disagreements, but through reflection and encouragement, they adapted their approach, listening more carefully to one another and refining their strategies. What stood out most was the shift in mindset: rather than rushing, successful teams paused to discuss the best plan of action, anticipate challenges and support peers who were less confident. This led to more efficient game play and a stronger sense of shared achievement. Upon reflection, most pupils reflected on what made their teamwork effective, with many highlighting that communication, trust and staying positive under pressure were priority. Overall, the lesson not only developed physical skills but also reinforced the importance of collaboration – an essential skill both in and beyond PE.
