Intent
At Parsloes Primary School, we believe that a high-quality languages curriculum is a vital part of preparing children for life in modern Britain and an increasingly interconnected world. It should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world whilst developing global citizenship. Our Spanish curriculum allows pupils to develop the confidence and skills needed to communicate in Spanish while fostering an appreciation of different cultures and traditions. Units of work are progressively sequenced, building on knowledge and skills across the four key language learning strands. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will have developed a strong foundation in Spanish and a positive attitude towards language learning, preparing them for the study of languages at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
Implementation
At Parsloes Primary School, we provide Spanish language learning in Key Stage Two. We follow the ‘Language Angels’ programme. A variety of language teaching methods are used, including games, role-play, use of a range of media and songs. The lessons are made as entertaining and enjoyable as possible, as we realise that this approach serves to develop a positive attitude in the children to the learning of modern foreign languages.
There is a clear progression of skills and understanding that builds based on the National Curriculum Programme of Study. This planning takes account of prior learning and builds on this. At each stage, the teacher will refer to prior learning and carry out informal assessment of children’s stage of development before moving on.
Language Acquisition – Language development is at the heart of every Spanish lesson. Language is progressively planned for in each unit.
Empowering Experiences
Active and Hands-on Learning – Spanish lessons provide opportunities for children to practise speaking and listening through games and activities, songs stories and role play. Learning is interactive, engaging and purposeful.
Relevance to Our Diverse Community – Learning Spanish helps children understand and celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity. Through exploring traditions, celebrations and life in Spanish-speaking countries, pupils develop respect for different cultures and perspectives.
New Knowledge and Skills – The Language Angels curriculum is carefully structured to ensure progression in vocabulary, grammar and communication skills. Prior learning is frequently revisited and embedded to support long-term language acquisition.
