06 Mar Year 6 – Reading
Year 6 pupils have been immersing themselves in the exciting world of The Firework-Maker’s Daughter as part of their reading lessons. Through the story, they are exploring how plot development, character depictions and language choices work together to create meaning within a text. By examining how events unfold and how characters are presented, our pupils are learning to think carefully about the author’s intentions and how these shape the reader’s understanding.
A key focus of the lessons has been inferencing and developing a stronger ability to read between the lines by gathering evidence from the text and combining it with their own prior knowledge. The pupils are using clues within the language and actions of characters to draw logical conclusions, make informed assumptions and identify details that are not always directly stated.
Through thoughtful discussion and comprehension activities, Year 6 are practising how to justify their ideas using evidence from the story. This process helps them fill in missing information and develop a deeper understanding of the text as a whole. As we continue reading The Firework-Maker’s Daughter, Year 6 pupils are becoming more confident, analytical readers who can engage critically with what they read.
