20 Mar Year 6 – Mathematics
This week, our Year 6 classroom was buzzing with energy as pupils took a hands-on approach to understanding the concept of ‘mean’. Moving beyond traditional methods, the children explored what the mean represents and how to calculate it through practical, engaging activities. To deepen their understanding, pupils didn’t just solve problems on paper—they became the data: by acting out different scenarios to see real-time representations of mathematical questions. Whether grouping themselves or redistributing values, this active approach helped them visualise how the mean works and why it is useful.
As the challenges became more complex, particularly with reasoning and problem-solving questions, this strategy proved invaluable: pupils were able to break down tricky concepts, interpret questions more clearly and arrive at accurate answers with greater confidence.
This engaging lesson not only strengthened their mathematical skills but also demonstrated the power of active learning. By bringing mathematics to life, our Year 6 pupils developed a deeper, more meaningful understanding—proving that sometimes, the best way to learn is to get up and get involved!
