23 Oct Year 6 – Drawing skills
Over the past few weeks, Year 6 have been developing their observational drawing skills, focusing on the challenging but rewarding task of creating scientifically accurate illustrations of Galapagos finches. Drawing inspiration from real-life studies, the children have embraced the technical aspects of scientific illustration, using a variety of pencil grades to experiment with texture, tone and fine detail.
In earlier lessons, they broke the process down into smaller parts — practising the intricate features of birds such as: feathers, beaks, eyes, and feet. These focused sessions allowed them to explore how different pencils could bring out the subtle textures and shading needed to represent the birds realistically.
Their final pieces are a true testament to their hard work, patience and developing artistic skill. Each drawing captures the unique features of the finch with care and precision and it’s clear how much thought has gone into every line and shade. We are particularly proud of the children’s annotations, where they reflected on their strengths and identified areas for future improvement — a vital part of the learning process.
Well done Year 6! This was not an easy challenge but you worked with determination and creativity. Your artwork is something to be proud of.
