16 Jan Year 6 – Cooking up a Storm!
Our DT lesson kicked off the half term with a bang as pupils dived head-first into a sensory exploration of food, perfectly linked to our Big Question: What is a healthy and balanced diet? The classroom was buzzing with curiosity as children evaluated a range of existing food products and individual ingredients, using their senses to smell, taste, touch and later discuss. From fresh vegetables to fragrant herbs and punchy spices, each ingredient had a role to play in helping pupils think carefully about flavour, nutrition and balance.
One of the most impressive moments of the lesson was seeing every child step confidently outside of their comfort zone: pupils showed fantastic enthusiasm and maturity, willingly trying everything on offer – including some brave souls who even sampled raw onions! Their thoughtful reactions and honest feedback sparked great discussions about personal taste, healthy choices and how different ingredients can work together in a simple dish, such as a basic soup recipe.
This hands-on lesson was the perfect entry point into our food-focused half term. It set the tone for creativity, curiosity and fun, while building essential skills in evaluation and healthy decision-making. If this lesson is anything to go by, we’re in for an exciting half term of delicious learning and fun food festivities! Keep an eye out for an invitation to come in and sample our final products made completely in-house by our Year 6 children.
