Since 2019, The EAL hub has offered children that are new to English an intensive 12 week English As A Second Language programme based on, Caroline Scott’s Excellence and Enjoyment: Learning and Teaching Bilingual Children guidance. Upon completion of the intervention, children have better understanding and ability to communicate in English, along with increased confidence to participate in class and daily school life.
Our pupil Language Ambassadors have also formed an integral part of the everyday lives of many pupils at Parsloes Primary School. Children who demonstrate the right qualities and who speak more than one language fluently, are selected to provide help and support to new pupils who arrive at Parsloes, with difficulties in speaking English. Our Language Ambassadors allow us to promote pupil voice within school, giving children the opportunity to have their say and contribute to their wider school community. We have found that it has helped our children grow in confidence and feel proud of their own culture, heritage and language.
Aside from supporting children, we are also committed to providing the best possible opportunities to parents of all language backgrounds too. We offer an accredited English as a Second Language course to parents and guardians of pupils in the school. This allows parents to improve speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Many of our parents are now more confident to talk with others and read with their children.
